If you like tearjerkers and true stories Lion is one to watch.
Based on the true story of Saroo Brierly, Lion tells the tale of a man searching for his family, 25 years after he was separated from them. Saroo grew up in a small Indian village in Kandwar. At five years old, while helping his older brother Guddu, Saroo falls asleep on a train and is transported almost 1000 miles to Calcutta.
Illiterate and unable to pronounce the name of his hometown, the five-year-old lives on the streets of Calcutta for a few months before he is taken to a children’s home. He is then adopted by a family in Australia and becomes a fully fledged Aussie.
A quarter of a century later, armed with a few memories, Saroo uses Google Maps to track down his home. Dev Patel, of Slumdog Millionaire fame, does an amazing job of portraying adult Saroo, a man conflicted by his love for his new life but also his desire to find his real family.
The true star of the story, however, is seven-year-old, Sunny Pawar. The adorable child star stole hearts with his performance and is guaranteed to be doing so for years to come. Does his story have a happy ending? You will have rent a copy from Chatz Cellular to find out.
One thing we can tell you is that Lion is worth the watch. A gripping tale of unconditional love, Lion will have you teary-eyed as you watch a small boy’s world turned upside down but despite all the challenges, he rises above them to make a success of his life. Lion is the true story of a life lost and found across continents and cultures and it’s one you can watch for years to come and still be amazed.
