Ten Things Tuesday – What not to do when visiting a bar for the first time

Some bars have an unwritten rule that any left-behind-coins go into the tip box

New in town?  Want to pop into the ‘local watering hole’ and catch up with local news? Of course you do.  But these places have their own constitutions.  Take care.

1. Do not breeze in, see that the patrons are watching football on the TV and demand that the barman changes the channel.

2. Do not boast that you have just won a tender to construct a school and then laugh uproariously and say you cannot even lay a brick.

3. Do not look at the guy behind you – he had the tender first.

4. Do not moan to the barman that his prices are ‘far more expensive than back at home’. This is normally met with the gruff whisper ‘well bugger off back home then’.

5. Never ask the guy next to you ‘so how was your day?’ It could be the start of a nasty relationship.

6. Do not leave your still full glass on the counter if you happen to go to the toilet. You have already peed off some patrons and they may put something nasty in your drink.

7. Do not boast that your car can go such-a-such speed and that your sound system is from NASA. In Dundee, Preshu has done all that and the bar patrons know that. Go back home.

8. Do not accidentally take the change on the bar top. Some bars have an unwritten rule that any left-behind-coins go into the tip box. Should you scoop up the change you will be frowned upon and treated like a Skinflint which is a no-no.

9. Do not challenge anyone to arm wrestle. You will be beaten and look silly. And you will knock your glass over.

10. Do not assume that because this may be KZN everyone supports the Sharks and go off about the Bulls. You may come short. These Bulls guys have all left Pretoria and are everywhere.
