Vryheid Round Table ‘Winter Knights’ brave the cold for charity
Round Table members gather every year just before Winter takes hold of the country in her icy grip and set up a collection point where they brave the cold in T-shirts and shorts, to collect blankets and nonperishable food items for the less fortunate, in honour of the plight of the homeless who fight an ongoing battle with the elements, especially in the winter months.
Maricel Collier, Adel Steenkamp, Marnus Steenkamp, Neil Collier, Mario Maritz and Chanè Niebuhr accepted the donation of 25 blankets as well as nonperishable food items from the Vryheid Herald's Christel Kusel, accompanied by Amy-Leah Black.
THE Winter Knights of Vryheid Round Table gathered outside Pick n Pay last Friday night to do their bit for the less fortunate.
Many will suffer through the icy cold, battling the harsh temperatures of winter with not much more than the clothes on their backs. It is with this heartwrenching reality in mind that the Winter Knights campaign came about.
Tablers usually set up the strategically placed collection points outside local supermarkets, in order to make it easier for the community to show their support for the cause, by being conveniently at hand when they’ve done their shopping.
After the collections have taken place, the members of Round Table do their annual Soup Run, where they go out into the community, finding those in desperate need of assistance and offer them some nourishment and a source of warmth.
Round Table’s Rupert Niebuhr, Gerhard Kemp and Hannes Viljoen prepared wors, donated by Pick n Pay in support of the Winter Knights campaign, to be sold to the public to raise funds.
“A big thank you to the public of Vryheid for their generous donations towards our Winter Knights campaign,” stated Vryheid Round Table 129 on social media. “We would also like to thank Pick ‘n Pay for their support and allowing us to collect at their store.”
With the proceeds from this year’s takings from the ‘Coke tin’ at the Mayfair, the Vryheid Herald was able to make a donation of 25 blankets and a generous amount of canned foods and non perishable food items to the Winter Knights campaign.
