DON’T MISS OUT: Astronomer to take Newcastillians on a starry journey

Night of the Stars takes place this Thursday – November 23 – at The Pines Wedding & Conference Village from 6pm onwards.

This Thursday, Newcastillians can spend a night with the stars.

Forget the glitzy cast of actors, writers and singers; these stars are in the sky above and are inherently more interesting for it.

At the heart of Night of the Stars is astronomer, Angus Burns.

Burns is well-known to locals for his fascinating astronomy photographs, which have gained huge views on social media.

Now he is bringing his love of the cosmos to the greater community.

Night of the Stars takes place this Thursday – November 23 – at The Pines Wedding & Conference Village from 6pm onwards.

Entry costs R25 per person.

The event will feature an astrophotography demonstration, a talk by optical instrument company, Celestron SA and live music by Durban-based two-man group, Quark.

A Celestron telescope is also up for grabs by one lucky resident.

Beyond the theme of the event, Burns has pledged the entry proceeds to St Martins Village, which he described as a reputable organisation ‘delivering real benefits to abandoned babies’.

“They represent the epitome of hope for those less fortunate and I thought given the need to be kinder towards each other on our little blue planet, they would be an ideal beneficiary.”

Burns added the event looked to be a good example of how the local community contributed its time and effort for a good cause.

The basic programme is as follows:

Guests arrive from 6pm and can purchase refreshments and snacks, with the entire event set in a relaxed atmosphere with background music and telescope displays.

Proceedings formally kick off at 7pm.

At this point, guests will be welcomed and the event will be explained, after which sponsors receive thank-yous and St Martins receives the entry takings.

A presentation on a journey through the solar system will be conducted by Burns thereafter.

This will be followed with a music break with Quark, a presentation by Celestron SA and a demonstration of the process of astrophotography.

The night wraps up with a lucky draw, closure and questions.
