#TechTuesday: The Lord of the Rings coming to the small screen

The Lord of the Rings will receive a television adaptation, with Amazon Studios set to produce it as an Amazon Original.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic saga, The Lord of the Rings is being adapted for television.

According to an official press release, tweeted by Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos, the company has acquired global television rights to The Lord of the Rings.

This would be a so-called multi-season commitment.

Listed as an Amazon Prime Original, the series will be produced by Amazon Studios.

Production would reportedly be in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.

According to the release, the series would still be set in Middle Earth.

However, the adaptation would actually precede The Fellowship of the Ring, exploring new storylines.

These would remain based on the literature created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

And there was scope for a potential spin-off series.

No news has been given on casting, showing dates or even the series’ name.

In the meantime, you might ask why Amazon is interested.

Statistically, The Lord of the Rings remains one of the greatest novel series of all time.

The books were named Amazon customers’ favourite book of the millennium, in a 1999 survey.

In 2003, it was also voted Britain’s most-loved novel EVER.

The movies rank among the highest-grossing film series of all time.

Of 30 total Academy Award nominations, the films won 17, with The Return of the King winning all 11 of its nominations.

This made the film tie with Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Academy Awards received for a movie.
