#TechTuesday: What you need to know before upgrading your phone

Are you planning on upgrading your phone? Here are a few helpful tips to make it easier for you:

Upgrading your phone can be one of life’s most frustrating tasks imaginable: choosing which phone to buy, getting a grasp on countless new features and the ever-changing technology at your disposal. So where should you start? Before you upgrade to a new device try answering these few simple questions.

Which network is best for you?

Not only are there endless newer features and devices to look out for, but most times the options are almost as much when it comes to choosing a service provider. Research different networks and the packages they offer in order to determine which network is best suited to your needs.

Have you read the fine print?

When upgrading, many contracts tend to limit your options when choosing a new device. There are also, in some cases, drastic changes in cost when upgrading to a newer device or ‘better’ contract. Read the fine print of your contract before settling and make sure you understand what changes would influence your upgrade and future upgrades.

How much data do you use?

Whether you are a tech-savvy teen gallivanting on various social media sites, downloading the newest, hottest music videos or gaming online, or a business mogul doing video conferencing, everyone’s data needs vary. Knowing what you want to use your new device for, try to determine what your data needs might be and research the different networks and packages which may fit your needs.

How long are you planning on using your new device?

Sometimes it might take months or even a year or two before your service provider would allow you to upgrade again, so it may be important to decide how long you are willing to commit to one device. Keeping this in mind, so many new questions and options can be considered.

Is a fixed contract the right option or should you consider prepaid options? Do you plan on keeping your old device as a secondary or backup device, and will you be able to exchange your new device if you aren’t happy with your new purchase?

In many cases there are certain time constraints when it comes to returning a new device, exchanging your device for a different one or even the warranty of your new device. Make sure you do extensive research about the exchange options and warranties your network is offering you.

Have you done the math?

Answering these questions can make your device upgrade as painless as possible. Consider your options, do the math and research before making the trip to upgrade your device.
