She retired after 37 years of teaching in Newcastle in 2016 to spend more time with her family, and today she stands on the brink of a new chapter in her life. Rita looked back fondly at her years in Newcastle, and explained that even after teaching generations of children and their parents, she would not change a thing.

“I have been teaching for 37 years and in the course of that time I have made so many friends. I have become close with my learners and their parents and in fact I have taught parents and their children,” Rita said with a smile.

She said it was truly heartbreaking to leave behind the people of Newcastle. For Rita and her husband, it was always a great pleasure to invite friends and family to their home. When Rita and Ramy welcome you in their home for the first time, you leave as part of the Tooray family.

“I am going to miss popping in at school and visiting my friends here. Home is where the heart is, and Newcastle is really where my heart is.”

Rita will be leaving a legacy of teaching behind in Newcastle, and will take with her a lifetime of memories.

“Giving without expecting anything in return, is the best motto anyone can have,” she advised.

She also said her new home in Durban would always be open to her friends and loved ones from Newcastle.

The Newcastle Advertiser wishes Rita and Ramy happiness and peace for the next chapter of their lives.
