#MotoringMonday: Lining up 2018’s World Car of the Year Awards candidates

Among top candidates for this year's World Car of the Year Awards top prize are the Volvo XC60 and Range Rover Velar.

The World Car of the Year Awards is the motoring equivalent of the Oscars.

For vehicle manufacturers, triumph at the awards is can be likened to a stamp of approval in terms of design, capability and performance.

Past winners read like a who’s who of the automotive world.

Notable names include Porsche Cayman, BMW 3 Series, Audi TT, Nissan GT-R, Chevrolet Camaro, Ferrari 458 Italia, Range Rover Evoque, Tesla Model S and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

For the record, Audi leads the total wins count with eight.

Entries are judged by a ‘jury’ of 48 automotive journalists representing countries worldwide.

Competition is divided into six categories.

Eligible candidates compete in the categories World Urban Car, World Luxury Car, World Green Car, World Car Design of the Year, World Performance Car and World Car of the Year.

The only prerequisite is the vehicle must sell in at least five countries and two continents.

So who’s in the running for a World Car of the Year Awards prize this year?

The finalists have been narrowed down to the top three in each category.

World Car of the Year

Mazda CX-5, Range Rover Velar and Volvo XC60

World Urban Car of the Year

Ford Fiesta, Suzuki Swift and Volkswagen Polo

World Green Car of the Year

BMW 530e iPerformance, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and Nissan Leaf

World Luxury Car of the Year

Audi A8, Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Panamera

World Performance Car

BMW M5, Honda Civic Type R and Lexus LC500

The winners will be announced during the New York International Auto Show, which runs from March 30 until April 8 this year.
