Here are our top tips for children, to ensure their Easter eggs are glorious:

Where to begin

If you want to decorate Easter eggs, you’ll need to first make the eggs ready for decoration.

The general consensus is that white eggs show off designs better.

There are two ways of preparing the eggs – emptying them beforehand or hard boiling them.

Obviously emptying the egg ensures it won’t have to be thrown away.

If you’re emptying the eggs, use a needle to pierce the shell and the yolk for convenience sake.

Then blow into one of the holes in the egg, after which a good rinse is in order.

For hard boiled eggs, begin with the eggs at room temperature, to prevent shells from cracking.

Place the eggs into a pot with water and slowly raise the temperature to a boil.

Remove the pot from the heat and leave the lid on for 15 minutes (larger eggs may need more time).

Some cool ideas:

Add drops of nail polish into a bowl of lukewarm water (the polish should spread on top of the water; if not, the temperature is either too warm or too cool).

Use a toothpick to make patterns in the nail polish.

Hold the egg, dunk it into the polish water and allow it to dry.

Nail polish remover is recommended for cleaning your fingers afterward.

Alternatively, cut some masking tape into strips or patterns, and adhere to the eggs.

Paint the eggs in your colour of choice and allow to dry.

Carefully remove the tape and your pattern will be revealed.
