Comedian leaves town’s residents in stitches

Inspired by international comedian, Rowan Atkinson, best known as Mr Bean, Maphumulo said his Single Partner One Man Show comedy set was based on different genres.

Comedian, Siyanda Maphumulo left Newcastle fans in stitches when he performed a somewhat theatrical show at the Farmers Hall on November 2.

Inspired by international comedian, Rowan Atkinson, best known as Mr Bean, Maphumulo said his Single Partner One Man Show comedy set was based on four genres:

“I have always strive to be quite strangely different in whatever I do, and that’s why I do different types of comedies in one show; the silence show, the theatrical show with props, the news comedy and the stand-up comedy. I grew up being fascinated by Mr Bean, and I’ve always thought he was intriguing in character and delivery. He inspired me to believe that art must be really felt and not just seen. My aim is to always leave people thinking and to show them that life is really about enjoying moments, even when you come across challenges.”

Siyanda Maphumulo performed a theatrical show at his Single Partner One Man Show.

Maphumulo started taking comedy seriously in 2009, when he was still at Mangosuthu University of Technology studying towards an Electrical Engineering course. He was in his third year, with just practicals to finish, when he entered a comedy competition.

He quipped he won because he was the only who pitched up. From that day, he started building his craft by seeking guidance from other well-known comedians, such as Felix Hlophe.

Maphumulo concluded by saying he was grateful for the turnout in Newcastle:

“I’d like to thank everyone who attended the show. You could have been anywhere else but you dedicated your time in coming and see me perform. My team and I don’t take anything for granted, and we believe we are still growing. We will definitely come back again next year for another massive show.”
