Two men have been arrested after police allegedly found Mandrax, Whoonga, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a stop-and-search operation in Nquthu.

The men, aged 40 and 41, were stopped during a stop-and-search operation in and around the Nquthu CBD on Tuesday, September 8.

The operation was conducted by members of the Nquthu Crime Prevention Unit following information about a suspect allegedly selling drugs in the area.

According to SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana, police followed up on the information and searched the suspects.

They allegedly found 59 Mandrax tablets and 20 capsules of Whoonga in their possession.

“One of the suspects was also found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Nkwanyana.

Both suspects were detained at Nquthu SAPS and are expected to appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court soon.

They face charges of possession of drugs and, in the case of the suspect found with the firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Nkwanyana told the Courier the arrests form part of ongoing efforts by police to disrupt the distribution of drugs and illegal firearms in the Nquthu area.
