For the young men and women of St John’s College, the Golden Eagle Residential Camp
is far more than spending a week away from home. It is an opportunity to step outside their familiar surroundings, serve others, learn from different communities and build
meaningful connections.

Over the past few years, each visit has strengthened the relationship between Community Hours, St John’s College and the organisations and individuals who generously
welcome the students into their communities, where they make a difference with selfless
hours of community service.

This year’s camp was another inspiring example of that growing partnership with the
community of Parys.

Working alongside Selma Kok and the Parys 150 Years Committee, Community
Hours and the St Johns students helped place 150 blankets, teddy bears and items of
clothing in the Town Square on August 14.

These handmade gifts were created by Knit and Natter groups in Bryanston and Kyalami.
Hundreds of hours were spent knitting, crocheting and crafting by women from communities outside Parys, resulting in gifts of warmth and care for mothers and babies in
the town as part of the Parys 150 celebration.
