Ngwathe benefits from National Treasury smart meters to create local opportunities
The Ngwathe Smart-Meter Project is funded by National Treasury, with Isandiso appointed as the implementing agent.
Ngwathe Local Municipality is taking forward the proposed Ngwathe Smart-Meter Project as part of efforts to improve electricity metering and address persistent challenges associated with unmetered and bridged electricity connections.
The proposed intervention is intended to support the transition of affected households towards legal and properly metered electricity supply, while contributing to better electricity network management and improved reliability of electricity services.
The Municipality emphasises that public participation is an essential component of the proposed project. No community should be expected to rely on rumours, speculation or incomplete information regarding an initiative that affects electricity services.
The initial rollout is proposed for Wards 1, 2, 9 and 14, where residents will be engaged through community meetings, door-to-door engagements and other approved municipal communication platforms. These engagements will allow residents to receive accurate information, understand the installation process, ask questions, raise concerns and identify appropriate channels for assistance.
The proposed project is also expected to provide meaningful local economic opportunities for local residents who will be participating in installation teams, with each team comprising field workers, subject to the applicable recruitment and appointment requirements.
The proposed rollout will further create opportunities for Ngwathe-based SMMEs and local electricians, while administrative and assistant opportunities will be targeted towards suitable residents.
The Municipality therefore makes a clear call to residents to participate actively in the public participation process that will be rolled out. Residents are encouraged to attend official meetings.
The Municipality will communicate through official platforms and encourages communities to verify information before accepting or circulating claims about the project.
The Ngwathe Smart-Meter Project is funded by National Treasury, with Isandiso appointed as the implementing agent.
The intention is not only to improve electricity metering, but also to strengthen community participation and create opportunities for local involvement. Its success will require cooperation between the Municipality, communities, local businesses and other relevant stakeholders.
