Parys Gazette received this media release from the Vaal University of Technology today (12-5-2016)
On the 3rd, 10th and 11th of May 2016 there has been unauthorized student protest led by the Student Representatives.
Council (SRC). These incidences have resulted in malicious damage and burning of University property. Despite Managements attempts to engage with the SRC and other involved student leaders, the protesting students continued with their unauthorized student protest which resulted in violence. Management is gravely concerned by the turn of events and has taken the necessary precautions to protect non-protesting students, staff and the University property. Management is also concerned about the emerging trend that shows a total disregard for University’s Management authority and the procurement policy, e.g. The insistence for the appointment of certain service providers without regard to University procurement processes. The call to withdraw criminal charges and lifting of suspensions against students and non-students facing serious allegations of damage to University property, grievous bodily harm to fellow students and security and burning of University property. Violation of the Human Rights of staff and students. Above all, the tearing-up of Managements response by the Secretary – General without giving students the benefit of considering the contents thereof, is a clear indication of a total disregard for Management and a clear indication of incitement.
On the night of the 11th May 2016, violence escalated to a point where several buildings of the University were burned, placing non-protesting students and staff at great risk. While Management respects the constitutional rights of protesting students, it is also important for protesting students to respect the rights of all non-protesting students and staff. In light of the escalating violence and the risk on life and property, Management has resolved to suspend academic programme until further notice.
NB! All students will thus be required to vacate the student residences by 12 May 2016, 14h00. Resumption of University operations will be duly communicated to all staff and students. For further information, please contact Mr M Diago: Director Special Projects 081 01 55280.
