Motorists urged not to ignore these signs

Residents who stay around Deelkraal and Doornfontein warn motorists not to ignore the signs on the R501 that indicate that it is closed.

A resident of Doornfontein, Mr Henk Smit, standing at a large crack close to the road.

The reason is that the sinkhole that caused the road to close is getting larger. The Carletonville Herald visited the site on 26 August and Monday and there is a marked difference in the size of the cracks around the hole.
While the sinkhole continues to collapse, there are now cracks within a metre of the tarred road surface.
According to residents, there is also a crack in the road itself.
Although the Herald contacted Sanral (the South African National Roads Agency) several times to find out when the sinkhole would be repaired, the organisation would not commit to any time frame.
