Build environment professionals and minister to visit collapsed George building

Urgent assistance of counselors in Shona, Portuguese and Chewa needed for survivors and their families

Build environment professionals and experts, together with the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala, and the National Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Alvin Botes,  will visit the  site of the collapsed building  at 75 Victoria Street, George, following the disaster earlier this week which has already claimed the lives of 20 people, with 32 people still being unaccounted for.

The George Municipality in their update today stated that with 7 days into the rescue and recovery efforts, operations are still ongoing. At 18:00 on May 12,  marking the 148th hour of operations, the confirmed statistics are as follows, the Municipality said.

– Total estimated individuals on-site during the incident: 81
– Rescued and recovered: 49
– Of which deceased: 20
– Currently hospitalized: 14
– Unaccounted for: 32

The Ministerial delegation visiting the building site on Monday will include leadership from the DPWI senior executives, Construction Industry and Development Board (CIDB), Council for the Built Environment (CBE), and its  regulatory professional councils, namely quantity surveyors,  town planners,  engineers, environment practitioners, land surveyors,  project and construction managers,  property valuers,  architects and landscape architects.
The two entities of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure are responsible for regulating the  built environment and construction sector in the country.
The purpose of the visit is to ascertain the role of  professionals who were involved with this project and assess if there was compliance with all built environment regulations.
The George Municipality today also asked for urgent assistance of people who can give counseling in Shona, Portuguese and Chewa for the survivors and their families. People who can assist can call 078 210 5972 or 061 504 4205.
