Thirty to benefit from cataract marathon

Qualifying patients who will be helped during this marathon will be admitted at the Parys District hospital on November 22.

Thirty patients will benefit from a Cataract Marathon at the Parys District Hospital next week, bringing hope to patients like 77-year-old Elisa Pele from Tumahole.

Elisa has cataracts in both eyes and have been struggling to see for the past three years.

A cataract operation can change her life and give her independence again.

The Department of Health in the Fezile Dabi District in collaboration with the Bureau of Blindness will be conducting the cataract Marathon from November 22 – 24 in Parys.

A total of 49 patients were screened at the Parys District Hospital on October 30.

During this screening process several other patients with eye problems, who cannot afford private healthcare, were also screened and advised on where to go for help.

Qualifying patients who will be helped during this marathon will be admitted at the Parys District hospital on November 22. Ophthalmologist specialists will be conducting the operations on November 23.

Seventy five percent of all cases of blindness are avoidable either through prevention or treatment – which is why getting your eyes tested at least once a year is important.
