Heritage Event Promotes Cultural Pride and Discipline in Tumahole
Ngwathe's Executive Mayor commended the organisation’s leader, Mr Fani Tekane, and his team for their efforts in hosting a successful and meaningful event.
Tumahole-based cultural group Bontate Ba FAMO, in partnership with the Ngwathe Local Municipality, hosted a special Heritage Month event on September 20 to celebrate and honour men and women who have undergone traditional initiation across the country.
The event began at the Tumahole taxi rank, where participants gathered before marching to the Master Nakedi Sports Centre. The procession was led by Ngwathe Executive Mayor, Cllr Victoria De Beers-Mthombeni, together with leaders of the organisation and principals of various initiation schools.
The aim of the gathering was to preserve the dignity of Sesotho cultural practices, particularly those associated with initiation schools, while also addressing social challenges such as drug abuse, gangsterism, and unemployment.

Among the keynote speakers was Mr Radebe Khina, one of the most senior leaders of initiation schools in the area. He emphasised the importance of discipline among initiates and the role of traditional values in shaping responsible community members.
In her address, Mayor De Beer-Mthombeni reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to working closely with community stakeholders in promoting cultural preservation and social cohesion.
