Free State Police assert authority during New Year’s Eve operations

The high-density operations formed part of Operation Shanela 2 and the Safer Festive Season campaign.

Police in the Free State, supported by integrated law-enforcement agencies, successfully concluded high-density operations aimed at ensuring a safe transition into the new year.

Conducted under Operation Shanela 2 and the Safer Festive Season campaign, the multi-disciplinary operation followed a two-phase tactical plan implemented across the province, with particular emphasis on the Mangaung District.

Roadblocks and Border Security

The operation began with early-morning parades on 31 December 2025, followed by the deployment of integrated teams that included the Department of Home Affairs and provincial traffic authorities. Strategic roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints were established along major routes such as the R702, N1 and N8.

Key focus areas included the fight against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), strengthening border security and combating illicit economic activities, enforcing liquor and firearms legislation, and protecting economic hubs and promoting tourism safety.

New Year’s Eve

As the province welcomed 2026, police launched a large-scale “show of force” from Twin City Mall. Stations within the Mangaung District pooled resources to conduct high-visibility patrols and vehicle control points.

Several successes were recorded during the crossover period. Police made immediate arrests for drunk driving, apprehended suspects linked to cellphone and bag snatching, and  multiple arrests for the illegal possession of dangerous weapons. Compliance operations were also carried out at malls, shopping centres and public gathering places, with strict action taken against public drinking.

Addressing members during the parade, Parkweg Police Station Commander Brigadier Teboho Jacobs issued a strong warning to would-be offenders while commending officers on the ground.

“We must stamp the authority of the state and stop those who move around with firearms or illegal contraband. No drinking and driving and no public drunkenness will be tolerated in our streets,” Jacobs said. “We will continue to intensify our patrols in areas such as Heidedal, Bloemspruit, Mangaung, Kopanong, Kagisanong and Parkweg.”

Brigadier Jacobs also urged officers to look out for one another while serving the community, stressing that the safety of residents remains the top priority as the festive season continues.
