Warning R59: Be cautious of possible hijackings

Hijacking incidents on the R59 have also been reported in the past.

Police sternly warn motorists to be cautious of possible hijackings on the R59 between Gauteng and the Free State, particularly in the Parys and Sasolburg areas. This follows an incident reported in Sasolburg last weekend, with the suspects moving on the R59 towards Parys.

Another two incidents were reported in the past week of a Volkswagen Polo overtaking vehicles, and then slowing down, preventing them from passing.

Incidents like these are often linked to hijackings, kidnappings, and robberies.

The criminals’ modus operandi often is to pose as law enforcement officers, using VW GTIs or VW Polos fitted with blue lights and sirens, used to flash down motorists, often at night or late evening.

Safety Tips to keep in mind:

  • If a suspicious vehicle with blue lights attempts to pull you over on the R59, do not stop immediately, especially not in isolated areas.
  • Slow down, turn on your hazard lights, and drive to the nearest busy place, such as a filling station, or go directly to the nearest police station.
  • Be cautious of unmarked vehicles; legitimate SAPS Highway Patrol vehicles are marked.
  • Motorists should not pick up hitch hikers, especially if they are two or more. Do not pick anybody up at intersections or hi-jacking hot spots. Also avoid stopping for vehicles that have “broken down.” Rather contact the authorities to investigate or assist.
