Weather alert: These roads are affected
CoGTA, working with the South African Weather Service, provincial and local government authorities and disaster management structures, continues to monitor developments and coordinate response and relief efforts.
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Velenkosini Hlabisa, urged communities to prioritise their safety as heavy snowfall, extreme cold and hazardous road conditions affect parts of the country.
Snowfall has affected parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, with icy roads, reduced visibility and dangerous driving conditions reported in several areas.
Motorists and members of the public are strongly urged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to snowfall-affected areas. Please do not travel for snow-chasing activities, as increased traffic may place additional pressure on emergency and road management services.
Reported affected routes include:
- R702 Dewetsdorp Road: wet and icy surfaces
- N3 near Harrismith: snowfall
- N6 between Reddersburg and Smithfield: snowfall
- N1 between Springfontein and Trompsburg: snowfall
Heavy downpours are also expected in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Minister Hlabisa urged communities to:
- Keep warm and remain indoors where possible.
- Avoid unnecessary travel and snow-covered or icy roads.
- Follow official weather, road and emergency-service advisories.
- Check on elderly people, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable community members.
- Keep essential medication, food and emergency supplies available.
- Do not attempt to cross hazardous or inaccessible areas.
