From a total of 15 samples collected from three different points in the Parys Wetland Park over the past 18 months, only one sample was considered “safe” for an environmental sample.

All other samples had unhealthy levels of chemical and/or microbial pollutants, with a focus on common contaminants such as nitrates and nitrites, phosphates, coliforms, and E. coli.

This is primarily due to sewage and industrial pollution entering freshwater resources.

The water samples are routinely collected from the spring and stream in the Parys Wetland, as well as from a stream flowing into the Vaal River through Mimosa.

The results pose a health risk to the surrounding environment, as well as to the communities living in the area.

The water monitoring initiative is made possible by WaterCAN (watercan.org.za). WaterCAN is a South African civil society initiative that promotes water justice, accountability, and citizen participation in water governance.

It empowers communities to monitor and report on water quality, leaks, shortages, and pollution through citizen science programmes, helping to improve transparency and advocate for access to safe, reliable water services across the country.

WaterCAN also works with researchers, schools, and local organizations to collect credible water data, raise awareness of water-related issues, and influence policy and decision-making to strengthen water security in South Africa.

Anybody can volunteer to become a WaterCAN citizen scientist and contribute to monitoring and improving our freshwater ecosystems and resources.
