Checkpoint challenge this Saturday – fun for the whole family

You only need to bring R100 entrance fee per team of 2 (proceeds go to a local charity); comfortable shoes and a torch or headlamp – part of the longer race will be in the dark.

This Saturday, 9 March, runners, enthusiastic walkers, families, and friends are invited to take part in an orienteering game right here in the streets of Parys.

Whitewater Training will be staging the challenge (on land, not water!) in the Metrogaine style, and everyone’s invited.
A Metrogaine is an urban form of the Rogaine orienteering race. Whereas a Rogaine takes place in the bush, a Metrogaine takes place in the suburbs.

Participants are given a map free of street names and a set of clues and checkpoints to locate using the map. Each checkpoint has a different points value and the aim is to gain as many points as possible in a specific amount of time.

Saturday’s race will have a half-hour version and an hour version. So, you will race through Parys to find as many checkpoints as you can and still make it back to the finish before time runs out. Participants will discover that it is not all about speed. They should strategise how they are going to approach the route to maximise their time.

Two people form a team and dogs on leads are welcome.

The event starts and ends at the Beer House next to Egweni just before the Potchefstroom bridge.

Registration, indemnities and briefing is at 17:30 for a 18:00 start.

You only need to bring R100 entrance fee per team of 2 (proceeds go to a local charity); comfortable shoes and a torch or headlamp – part of the longer race will be in the dark.
