Enforcement drive puts workplace compliance under the spotlight

Several foreign nationals found working without valid permits were arrested by the Immigration Unit during the week.

The Deputy Minister of the Department of Employment and Labour, Jomo Sibiya, on Friday concluded a five-day High Impact Blitz inspection in Ngwathe when he visited Parys, where he addressed the multidisciplinary team that took part in the week-long enforcement drive aimed at strengthening compliance, protecting workers’ rights and promoting effective service delivery across the province.

Inspecting businesses in Parys and Vredefort, the Department of Employment and Labour assessed levels of compliance with key labour legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the National Minimum Wage Act, the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and the Unemployment Insurance Act.

Officials from the Department of Home Affairs, in turn, enforced immigration laws, while municipal officials checked compliance with municipal by-laws. The team was accompanied by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).


The Deputy Minister was welcomed by the Inspector-General, Ngwathe Local Municipality leadership, the Department of Employment and Labour Free State Chief Director: Provincial Operations, and the Provincial Chief Inspector. Addressing the multidisciplinary parade, Sibiya expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders for their commitment and collaborative efforts throughout the week, emphasising the importance of promoting compliance.

The Deputy Minister led the team during the final day’s inspections, conducting an advocacy session with employees on their rights and benefits.


Several foreign nationals found working without valid permits were arrested by the Immigration Unit during the week. Employers were subsequently issued with J534 fines for employing foreign nationals without the required authorisation.
