Birthday parties are synonymous with binge drinking and indulging in food in celebration of a special day. For Themba Malangeni, however, his 26th birthday on 28 July will be all about giving back to the community.
‘I’ve decided to start an initiative where anyone who comes to my party has to donates old clothes, shoes, socks, hats, beanies or gloves for charity.’
Themba says he has already identified Ikhaya la Bantwana orphanage in Ikageng. ‘All the items collected will go, not only to the orphanage but to other charities that have been identified,’ he said. ‘I do not want to celebrate my birthday like other people – I also want to help those in need. This will not be a once-off initiative,’ he says.
‘In addition to the charitable aspect, I will also be giving local talent a platform and artists from Potchefstroom and nearby areas who will be performing at the event.’
The party will take place at 5804 Boipelo Street Kanana, Ikageng from 18:00 Z 00:00 on 28 July 2017.
