A 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped in the car of an unknown man after hitchhiking from a pub in the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police spokesperson, the complainant alleges that she got a lift from the pub to Ext. 7 at about 03:15 on Sunday morning. ‘The woman says she was with a friend and the driver in the car. The driver then demanded R20 from the friend and dropped her off at home after she made the payment.
He then told the woman he was taking her back to the pub because she had not paid her R20,’ said Trom.
The woman was scared and jumped from the car on the Promosa road near Skierlik. ‘The driver stopped the car, chased her and caught up with her. He closed her mouth with his hand and dragged her to the car, opened the door and raped her repeatedly in the seat of the car,’ reported Trom.
The suspect is unknown at the stage and the police are still investigating a rape case.
Trom has appealed to women to stop accepting rides from strangers or walking home alone after being at the pub because this makes them vulnerable and targets of rape and human trafficking.
