Peri-Peri allegedly assault a 22-year-old man

A 22-year-old man alleges that he and his friend were on their way home when they came across people who he says are members of the Peri-Peri Community Safety group, allegedly searched and assaulted him.

In the early hours last Saturday (8 February) morning, a 22-year-old man alleges that he and his friend were on their way home when they came across people who he says are members of the Peri-Peri Community Safety group, in extension 7 near the taxi rank. According to him, the members began to search him.

According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, Police spokesperson, when the people in question searched him they allegedly found various items on him. Such as, a Bluetooth speaker, a blue bag that had clothes inside, a panga and more.

“Suddenly they started beating him with open hands, sticks and iron bars. They tied up his hands with cable ties,” said Trom. She further mentions that the people then allegedly took him to extension 7, to the guy who reported the matter to them. Whilst there, they allegedly continued to hit him. “He had visible injuries on his right cheek and internal pain on his back and body,” said Trom.

Sgt Trom confirms that a case of assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm was opened.

Lucky Lerefolo, the president and co-founder of the Peri Peri, said that he was not aware of the allegations made. He mentioned that people sometimes identify themselves as part of the watch group when they are not.
