On Thursday (13 February), the police, a local councilor and about 50 community members conducted a search in extension 12, Jouberton, to look for a kidnapped 15-month-old baby, Mpho Kgoroyadira.
During their search in an open field, they discovered the baby’s decomposing body, hidden under a rock.
In a statement, Provincial Police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh, states that according to information received, Mpho was allegedly kidnapped on Saturday, 1 February.
“She was sleeping with her 22-year-old mother in a house in Extension 12, Jouberton at about 20:00. Her mother woke up and realised that there was a person in their house. The unknown suspect grabbed Mpho and fled the scene on foot. The suspect was not seen after the incident and a kidnapping case was opened,” said Colonel Myburgh
Since the baby’s body was found, the police are now investigating a case of murder. No arrests have been made yet.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena thanked the community for their assistance and support during their search for Mpho. He further condemned the incident and said the police will work hard to ensure the culprit is put behind bars.
