Become part of a life-saving movement – become a blood donor

September brings with it the beginning of spring which is often symbolic of new life and a new start for people after experiencing the cold winter weather.

September brings with it the beginning of spring which is often symbolic of new life and a new start for people after experiencing the cold winter weather. The South African National Blood Service would like to encourage everyone to join the family of donors who are dedicated to giving others the gift of life through the dedicated, ceremonial act of blood donation.

In order to maintain a safe and sufficient blood supply, SANBS would like to encourage one and all to join the #donor100 movement in Parys where SANBS aims to enroll 100 new donors by the end of 2021. The #donor100 campaign includes the Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Lichtenburg, Mafikeng and surrounding Communities. SANBS has experienced a decrease in blood collections in these areas and would like to appeal to regular and new donors, especially the youth to become part of a life-saving movement by donating blood.

To become a blood donor, you must:

  • Weigh at least 50kg
  • Be between the ages of 16 and 75
  • Be in good health
  • Lead a safe sexual lifestyle
  • Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient
  • Commit to donating blood regularly

In the drive to consistently provide safe blood to patients across the country, the SANBS appeals to blood donors to continue to make a difference. “Blood donation is a great way to give someone else more time to enjoy more celebratory days and moments with their friends and families. We urge you to spare 30 minutes of your time to make a life-saving difference this Heritage Day,” said Dr. Karin van den Berg, SANBS Medical Director.

Together, we can create a living heritage by committing to donating blood regularly. With one blood donation, you can save up to three lives.

SANBS would like to invite you to donate blood in Potchefstroom:

Monday – Friday: 09:00 – 17:00

Wednesday: 10:00 – 18:00

2 Esselen Street, by the Bult, next to the Post Office

Target: 100 units of blood
