Rockville informal settlement a year old

Since there was never any intervention from the municipality to assist them, they have come up with their own plans to install running water.

Rockville is a newly established community in Promosa next to Marikana and many have already claimed their place. Although the area has been without electricity and other basic services, residents say since there was never any intervention from the municipality to assist them, they have come up with their own plans to install running water.

Lorraine Makousa, who has been living in the area since it was formed, has seen it all and admits she is thankful for how far they have come as a community.
“It was difficult at first without water but thanks to our community leaders, who kept their word, our struggle didn’t last for long,” she said.
“Thanks to them, I’ve been able to create a place to call home despite all the hardships,” she said.

Lesego Pule who has been living in the community for nine months says despite the challenges, she has grown fond of the unity amongst the Rockville community. Although Lesego is often away due to work, she has become aware of the high crime rate in the area due to the lack of electricity but she is able to ask a few of her neighbours to look out for her whenever she isn’t around.

“I have decided to stay here for this long because I’m at the peak of my independence and I want my children to one day to have a home in a solid community,” she said.
“Although we still have a long way to go, I wish to see us develop infrastructure and proper service delivery over the year,” she added.

Another resident added that due to the recent heavy rain one of the biggest challenges they are facing is the grass, which has been growing rapidly and has increased the crime rate in the area.
“We don’t expect anything from the municipality but we hope that we will one day be a recognised community,” they concluded.
The Herald asked the municipality for comment but received nothing by the time of going to print.
