Uncle in custody for alleged rape of 12-year-old

A 33-year-old man has been remanded in custody after allegedly raping his 12-year-old niece in Oukasie, near Brits. He is expected to apply for bail next week as police continue their investigation.

A 33-year-old man has been remanded in custody following his appearance at the Brits Magistrate’s Court on  September 30, on a charge of rape. He is expected to return to court on October 8, for a formal bail application.
According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, the man was arrested on September 29, in connection with the alleged rape of his 12-year-old niece.
“It is alleged that the girl had gone to visit her grandmother’s home when she encountered her uncle inside the house. After she went to the kitchen, the man reportedly grabbed her from behind and forced her into a bedroom, where the assault allegedly took place,” Tselanyane said in a statement.
The accused apparently threatened the child afterwards, warning her not to disclose the incident. Despite the threats, the girl confided in her mother, who immediately reported the matter to the police. A case of rape was opened, and the suspect was traced and arrested within hours.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, strongly condemned the incident. “Sexual paedophiles and predators like this one must never be allowed to prey on defenceless and vulnerable children and hopefully he will face the full might of the law,” Asaneng said.
