DIY Saturday: Nine ways to use wooden crates

From bedside tables to bookshelves, the humble wooden crate has so many uses – no wonder it’s a DIY decorator’s dream!

When it comes to home décor, there’s a move towards items that are practical, affordable and versatile. Wooden crates tick all three boxes (no pun intended), plus they’re easy to style. Here are nine ideas to get you started… Grab your paint and wood glue!

Organise shoes

Tired of messy shoes in the hallway? Stack crates horizontally for flats, vertically for heels and you’ll have a neat storage solution that works in both contemporary and country settings.

Store bathroom items

Wooden crates provide ideal storage in small spaces such as bathrooms. Paint them white to keep the effect light and colour coordinate linen and loo paper for maximum style impact!

Create a bedside table

A crate on casters or hairpin legs such as the one pictured creates a neat, bedside option that won’t clutter your sleeping space. Just make sure you don’t overload it as it could topple.

Statement wall

Forget built-in furniture. This stunning wall unit, crafted entirely from crates by The Merry Thought, makes a much better statement. And it can be repurposed when (if) you tire of it. Perfect to display books, plants and décor items.

Pantry organisation

An organised pantry is so much easier to navigate, and it looks better too! Simply add chalkboard labels to easily identify what is stored in each one. It’s a great idea for garages and laundry rooms too.

Custom desk

It’s easy to build your own work-from-home desk with a collection of crates and some wooden board. This idea works well in children’s rooms too – just add paint to brighten the look.

Kitchen shelving

A brilliant solution for small kitchens and those with limited cupboard space. Just make sure you secure your crates firmly to the wall with sturdy nails and shelf brackets to avoid disaster.

Coffee tables

On a budget? Crate coffee tables are a cost-effective solution for both indoor and outdoor use. Apply wood stain for a more rustic appearance, caster wheels for ease of movement and a protective sealant if your table is going to be exposed to the elements.

Plant stand

Plants are our new favourite obsession and we love nothing more than to show them off! This crate stand is simple, but oh-so-effective and would look amazing in an entrance area or patio.
