How to prevent suffering from jet lag

Insomnia, headache, mood swings…don’t let jet lag ruin your holiday.

If catching up on traveling is on your to-do list this year, take note of these three tips to prevent feeling jet lagged to make the most of your time abroad:

Sync yourself into the new time zone

Forget following your normal sleep/wake routine if you are going to cross a couple of time zones on your next travel mission. The faster you try to adopt and adapt to the new time zone, the better. Start while you are in the air on route to the destination. If you arrive during the night, try to catch some sleep before you land – if you arrive during the day, rather try to stay awake.

Dose up on sunlight

Go outside and fuel up on some sunlight to help your body wake up, as it will reduce the release of melatonin hormones that make you sleepy while you are in the light. Start your morning by going outside and just spend a minute taking it all in.

Create a disruption-free sleep space

Switch off any potential disruptions such as alarms or phones to prevent electronics from waking you unintentionally. Set the room temperature to be cool, so that you don’t wake up feeling hot and sweaty or frozen to the bone.
