As the year enters the second academic quarter, matric pupils are urged to apply at tertiary institutions.

Career guidance starts as early as possible, but some pupils take too long to decide their chosen career paths.

Different schools have programmes that help and guide school children in making this difficult choice.

Principal of Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge, Christo de Wit explained that they prepare the pupils before they reach Grade 12.

“”Our on-staff educational psychologist, facilitate the career and aptitude assessments for the Grade 11’s to assist them with deciding on a career path and study direction. We have an annual tertiary institution exhibition where we put our pupils in direct contact with the universities,” said De Wit.

The principal added that they have a very disciplined and structured academic environment with a holistic approach to education.

This, he said, prepares Trinityhouse pupils to cope exceptionally well with the rigours of tertiary study.

Abbotts College Northcliff also helps to prepare their Grade 12 pupils to be ready for university life.

“The process starts during enrolment when students receive guidance regarding subject choices and university entrance requirements. The unique Abbotts College system, makes it possible for teachers to monitor students’ performance, throughout the FET phase (Grade 10 – 12) and in doing so ensuring that students qualify with diploma and or bachelors degree passes,” explained JC Engelbrecht, principal of Abbotts College Northcliff.

The principal added that they hold career weeks, and during those weeks they ensure that pupils can get opportunities for job shadowing and visits by tertiary institutions, students are exposed to various career and study options.

“Abbotts College Northcliff works closely with various universities and is acknowledged as a main feeder to their institutions.”

He added that the unique Abbotts College education model allows students to experience high school education in a young adult environment.
