UPDATE: Family says boy is alive, police maintain he is dead

RANDPARK RIDGE – Family says that the boy is recovering in hospital, police say he is dead.

Douglasdale Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan maintains that a teenage boy shot during a robbery in the late hours of 4 March is dead, despite the boy’s brother telling the media otherwise.

It was previously reported that a case of robbery and murder was opened at Honeydew Police Station following an incident in Randpark Ridge (see previous article).

The boy’s brother says that the boy is in fact alive, and recovering in the intensive care unit at Netcare Olivedale Hospital.

“My brother is in the ICU  in a stable condition,” the brother said. “Three suspects came into our home at 11pm. Three shots were fired at my mom and dad. The third shot hit my brother after he hit one of the suspects with a bat. A vehicle,  firearm and other valuables were stolen from our home.”

WO Muthan said that a teenage boy was outside a house in Randpark Ridge when three armed robbers gained entry into the home. “When he arrived home he was forcefully put into a room with his mom by the robbers. His father attempted to gain entry into the room but instead the son was shot in the stomach attempting to help his dad. The ambulance transported the teenager to the Netcare Olivedale Hospital but unfortunately he died during surgery.”

WO Muthan refused to comment further on the matter.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungel Dlamini said that he would investigate the matter.
