Diggers display pure dominance at home

Diggers Rugby Club achieved an important victory in their first league encounter against Germiston Simmer Rugby Club.

Diggers Rugby Club had a dream start to the new season as all their teams put on brilliant performances in their first game of the league against Germiston Simmer Rugby Club.

The U21 side cruised to victory with 39-5 followed by the second team with a comfortable 31-19 win. The first team did not drop the ball as they annihilated the Germiston side, 40-22.

In the first team’s game, the visitors showed a bit of resilience and were able to take the game to Diggers in the first 15 to 20 minutes. The action was end-to-end – with both teams scoring tries. Diggers had the upper hand and were able to score four tries in the first half.

Kane Mavrodaris, Diggers’ first team coach explained that the Germiston side got out of the blocks quickly and put them under tremendous pressure with their kicking game.

“I’m proud of the boys for fighting back though and scoring four tries in the first half and 6 in total. There are a number of things we need to work on, but this team is a work in progress and we as the coaching staff are happy with the continuous improvement the group is showing as a collective.”

He added that at half time they worked on countering the visitors’ kick game by improving their backfield management and the work rate to get into better defensive alignments.

“We’re happy with our attack structure and general launches off the first phase. We definitely need to work on breakdown management and defence of multiphase situations.”

The club will be looking to perform better and win most of their home games in front of their supporters.

“Home games are a must-win in almost any competition, you know that when you travel to a club they grow an extra arm and leg with the effort they put into the game. With that being said, we are definitely hoping to travel well.”
