Johannesburg Water points to Johannesburg Roads Agency to reinstate roads
Johannesburg Water confirms it has cleared the blocked storm water drain on Bram Fischer Drive, and that JRA now needs to do their part.
Johannesburg Water (JW) has confirmed that they have attended to the sewage leak on Bram Fischer Drive, and Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) is responsible for the repairs and reinstatements.
Entity spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala explained that the entity conducted investigations into the water believed to be mixed with sewage that was flowing along the roadway, while a blocked storm water drain was discharging foul-smelling black water.

Shabalala said that rugs, clothes, and other foreign objects in the sewer system caused the blockage, and that it has since been cleared.
Closer to the drain lies a large road reinstatement that is filled with water, raising concerns that an underground leak may still be present.
Shabalala confirmed that the leak has been repaired, and was caused by ageing infrastructure. She further stated that the entity has an existing service level agreement (SLA) with JRA regarding reinstatements.
One of the longest-running issues is on Nerina Street, where a section of road has remained unrepaired for an estimated two to three years after a water leak was fixed.

The incomplete reinstatement has left one lane partially blocked, forcing motorists to navigate around the damaged section and raising concerns about road safety. The hole is now used as a dump site as it has filled with waste. “The matter will be escalated to JRA for repairs, but we cannot give timelines on behalf of JRA.”
She added that the work order for reinstatement was done and submitted to JRA.
Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer said the reason JW hasn’t backfilled Nerina Street is because of a storm water drainage that needs to be repaired first.
“JRA needs to come and reconstruct the storm water drain. Nothing has happened for close to three years now. They could have backfilled it at least for the time being to make the road safe.”
