The University of Johannesburg (UJ) walked away with all three points after overcoming a spirited Crusaders FC side in a captivating Rand Central Local Football Association Division 1 (Winter League) encounter that produced five goals and plenty of drama.

UJ made a patient start, controlling possession without creating many clear-cut opportunities. Their breakthrough came just before the interval when a dangerous ball forced a Crusaders defender into an unfortunate own goal, giving UJ a 1–0 advantage heading into half-time.

Crusaders emerged from the dressing room with a completely different mindset. Determined to get back into the contest, they pressed aggressively, keeping UJ pinned inside their own half. Their persistence was rewarded when they won a penalty, which Ituah Khumalo confidently stepped up to, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and levelling the score.

The equaliser sparked the game into life. UJ quickly regained the lead after capitalising on a defensive lapse. Thato Chipu caught the Crusaders backline off guard with a clinical finish, yet the Crusaders refused to give in. They continued to attack with purpose and were rewarded when a brilliant solo run by Takudzwa Gadidzwa ended with a composed finish to make it 2–2.

With both teams chasing a winner, UJ kept their composure and trusted their passing game. The decisive moment arrived when a loose ball fell kindly to midfielder Amile Xulu on the edge of the area. Without hesitation, he curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner, sealing a thrilling 3–2 victory and ensuring UJ returned home with maximum points.

Disappointed with the result, Crusaders coach Lefa Moloi said his team gave the game away by conceding three cheap goals. “They fought well once we went a goal down, but still, we were not solid at the back. We will go back to the drawing board and work harder on set piece plays and on defending transitions because that’s where we lacked.”

UJ coach Bongolwethu Jayiya praised his players for showing character and grinding for the results. “It was a scrappy game, and I told my boys that the field is small and they will be physical. The courage they gave today was great, and I just want more of that from them going forward.”
