Excavation causes a hole lot of havoc

Barrier tape the sole means of keeping a curious child out, claim residents.

Residents in Kya Sand informal settlement were up in arms because Johannesburg Water (JW) dug up a hole to fix a leaking water pipe and left the excavation exposed.

Community leader Simon Ntshingila said, “The hole filled up with water because the leaking pipe was never fixed correctly. Johannesburg Water surrounded the hole with barrier tape but a child does not know of the danger behind those barriers.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane said, “A JW team closed up the hole on 24 July more then a month after they first attempted to fix the problem. Residents contacted me the following day complaining about the danger and I told JW, but they have only backfilled it now.”

Joburg Water has not responded as to why it took so long to fill the hole.
