Total leaves a total mess
Filling station contributes to illegal dumping problem.
Petrol stations undergo upgrades every couple of years to keep attracting new customers.
The Total Service Station on the corner of Riverbend and Witkoppen Roads underwent renovations in September. Construction workers took the old Total signs and other petrol station products and dumped them around the corner in Epsom Avenue next to the landfill site.
Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane expressed his outrage at the illegal dumping. “The fact that everything just gets dumped here without notifying anyone shocks me. We already have illegal dumping problems in the area and this just adds to the dilemma we are facing,” said Mafokwane.
The management of the petrol station was unavailable for comment, but Total South Africa’s spokesperson Nadia Vosloo apologised for the situation. She said, “We use contractors and sub-contractors to do certain projects and we have specific policies and procedures in place when it comes to cleaning up waste management. Our team contacted the relevant people to try and establish what had happened, but so far we don’t have a concrete answer as yet. They are still investigating the matter”.
Vosloo confirmed that the waste was removed and sent for recycling.
