Gardens for sustainability
The day of service by Lilly South Africa took the route to Zandspruit.

Employees from the innovation-driven pharmaceutical corporation Eli Lilly and Company spent a day in Zandspruit on 10 October.
The staff wanted to assist the community in keeping their animals healthy and planting vegetables.
This was part of the Eli Lilly’s global day of service where over 20 000 employees were involved in community projects. Eli Lilly South Africa managing director Ann-Marie Hosang-Archer said the aim of the day was to create sustainability in the Zandspruit community.
“Together with the help of residents we planted sack gardens, and vaccinated and bathed the dogs in the community. We want to educate the community on how to take care of their animals.”
Over 80 children were treated to a delicious meal, cold drinks and a balloon animal.
Project Hope, an international health care organisation, joined forces with the corporation to teach the children about diabetes and eating healthy.
Hosang-Archer added that planting sack gardens, which take up very little space and are portable, is one way to encourage community members to become involved in making a difference in their daily lives.
