Johannesburg Roads Agency resumes stalled Malibongwe Drive roadworks
Contractual disputes previously halted maintenance on a dug-up section of the busy Randburg thoroughfare, leaving motorists to deal with potholes and loose gravel.
Repairs have resumed on a section of Malibongwe Drive in Randburg following months of delays caused by contractual disputes.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said internal issues with a service provider halted work after a section of the busy thoroughfare was dug up for resurfacing.

The incomplete work left motorists, residents, and local business owners navigating severe potholes, loose gravel, and uneven surfaces.
Drivers complained of vehicle damage, traffic congestion, and excessive dust from passing vehicles along the affected stretch.
Kwazelela Mcetywa, JRA head of Infrastructure Development, explained that while contractual issues initially stopped progress, the contractor has returned to the site to carry out temporary maintenance.

“They are patching and filling potholes, sweeping and removing loose stones, and implementing all necessary measures to improve road safety and minimise the risk of damage to vehicles,” Mcetywa said.
The entity apologised to road users for the inconvenience.
JRA was contacted on September 10, 2026, regarding the repair timeline, whether the current fixes are temporary or permanent, and if the contractual issues have been fully resolved. Their response will be added once received.
