City Parks buries rubbish

Parks entity tackles rubbish one heap at a time.

One of the main dumping sites in Bloubosrand is located next to Oosterland Avenue.

Trucks used to dump rubbish at the site before it was closed off a couple of weeks ago. However, a new problem arose: the heaps of rubbish were too big to dump elsewhere.

But Johannesburg City Parks came up with an interesting – if not questionable – solution.

The entity decided to dig large holes and dump the rubbish inside them, then fill them up with soil. Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane praised City Parks for the initiative it has taken to remove the rubbish. However, city council urban management inspector Silver Mabusela said, “What still puzzles me is the fact that City Parks are digging holes instead of removing the rubbish with trucks and dumping it at a proper rubbish dump.”

No comment was received from City Parks at the time of going to print.
