Pavement issue a thing of the past

Pedestrians rejoice after company repairs pavement.

Pedestrians in Kya Sand informal settlement are forced to use roads instead of pavements, owing to the shocking state of their neighbourhood sidewalks.

Ward 96 councillor Matome Mafokwane was ecstatic when he saw a private contractor from Northlands Business Park repairing the pavements. “These pavements have been in a shocking state for the last year and the residents who live inside the informal settlement had to use the road and endanger themselves on their way to and back from the shops.”

Thabo Mlangu, a Kya Sand informal settlement resident who was almost hit twice by a vehicle while using the road, was extremely happy to see the pavement being fixed on 27 September. “My concern was not only for the safety of myself but also for the safety of my family who also had to make use of the road to enter and exit the settlement,” said Mlangu

“The issue was escalated to the Roads Agency numerous times during the last year and they never made a plan to fix the pavements,” concluded Mafokwane.

Johannesburg Roads Agency was unavailable for comment at time of going to print.
