SA Bowls Senior Team champions win in Namibia.

Randpark Ridge resident Allan Gordon (66) recently represented his country in a bowls match against Namibia at the Wingate Club in Pretoria.

Gordon was selected as a member of the Bowls South Africa Senior Side team and from 1 to 3 November the team competed against Namibia. Gordon was one of five people that represented South Africa, and the team won 22-10. The senior side only plays against Namibia – one year in South Africa and one year in Namibia. Gordon has been playing bowls since 1979. “In 1997 and 1998 I played for the South African bowls team. Once you turn 60 you are a senior.”

Together with the announcement of his senior side selection, he was informed he was nominated as a Springbok selector for the senior and junior opens. Gordon explained that, “to be selected for the national team you have to do well at your club for about four to five years, and do well in competitions too. Then you also have to participate provincially and fare well. Eventually the JBA (Johannesburg Bowls Association) let the fairly good players play together. And you have to do well in all of your district tournaments.”
