Cyclists take on the heat

Cyclists ride for a purpose.

Although Johannesburg experienced heavy rain and thunder the previous night, the morning of Sunday 17 November saw cyclists of the 94.7 Cycle Challenge braving intense heat. Despite the scorcher, cyclists has fun and enjoyed an event they had been anticipating for months.

The Cycle Challenge has successfully established itself as a world class-event, and perhaps what is most touching about this exciting day is the Ride for a Purpose campaign. Each year over 31 000 cyclists take to the streets of Johannesburg in support of a cause – be it a charity or a loved one who cannot take part due to illness. Supporters of Choc (Childhood Cancer Foundation) numbered 300, and were easily identifiable in their exotic cow outfits. Thirteen cyclists sported pink and purple shirts in support of endometriosis awareness, in association with the Endometriosis Society of South Africa. Lymepark resident Dina Bohnsack, whose daughter suffers from endometriosis, brought the cyclists together. “It was a good day. Most of us did our personal best,” Bohnsack said.

The Brides with a Purpose challenge required couples to ride in wedding attire, and in doing so stood the chance of winning a honeymoon to the value of R70 000.

Needless to say, the cycle challenge was a fantastic and productive day for all who participated. And with cows and brides on bicycles, what more could one ask for?
