Jukskei River flooding

Resident surprised by the efficiency of the Johannesburg Roads Agency.

The down pour in Randburg on 20 November caused quite a stir when the Jukskei River flooded in Douglasdale.

The river’s boundary fence washed into Robyn Street in the early morning hours. Resident Quintin Bergh was shocked when he discovered the washed up fence blocking the left hand lane of the road.

“It was a sight to see as traffic congested on the road during the peak hours.” He added that this is not the first time that the river had flooded. “What caused the river to flood is all of the rubbish that gets jammed into the storm water drain that runs underneath the road. This is because City Parks don’t clean up the drains and during a storm overflows.”

Bergh contacted the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and received a reference number. He imagined that it would take them a week to fix the problem, but he was pleasantly surprised when a the roads agency team removed the fence the next day. “They showed up exactly 24 hours after I contacted them and I have to applaud them for their hard work and determination.”

The roads agency’s spokesperson Mosa Makhalima thanked Bergh for contacting the them so quickly. “I urge residents to contact the Johannesburg Connect Call Centre to report problems. It helps us to log the problems and sort them out quickly,” concluded Makhalima.

No comment was received from City Parks at time of going to press.
