Ranburg Sun journalist AJ Opperman was awarded a PICA award as Profile Writer of the Year in the section for Consumer Magazines.

The winners were announced at Emperors Palace in the East Rand, Gauteng. The South African magazine industry annually awards journalists and publications in various sections for their contributions. The PICA awards are considered to be the Oscars of the magazine industry.

As a freelance writer for the Afrikaanse Taalkultuurvereniging (ATKV) he wrote a profile on the broadcast journalist and creator of Liewe Heksie, Verna Vels. Vels turned 80 this year and the article highlighted her life and career. The article appeared in the AKTV’s quarterly magazine Taalgenoot.
