A slam dunk
The Randburg basketball courts are full of potential stars.
Although basketball is not very big in South Africa, the Randburg basketball court is never empty on a Saturday.
Basketball fanatics from across Johannesburg come together every Saturday at 9am and play matches against each other throughout the day.
“We come here to play social games,” said Pearson Makungu, one of the organisers. “We take this opportunity to catch up with friends, but play the sport while doing so.”
Makungu said there were three professional teams that were from Randburg that took part in the Braamfontein Blue Inner City League, which is a platform for players to play professionally against other teams in the country.
“The three teams are the Rhino’s, the Phoenix and the Phenomena’s also known as the Phenoms,” said Dumile Chiume, captain of The Phoenix.
“We would like to take the sport to a professional level internationally and believe that this can only be possible if sponsors would sponsor the sport.”
Chiume encourages more people to play the sport, and even more so encourages women to participate. “Should people wish to find out more about the practice days or wish to sponsor us, they can contact me,” urged Chiume.
