River rehab

DOUGLASDALE - Green Beings Rehab River event will take place on 22 March in an effort to keep the community clean.

Green Beings, an environmental non-governmental organisation will host the River Rehab event on 22 March on the corner of Platina Street and Juweel Street in Douglasdale.

“Volunteers can help remove waste and rubbish from along the river banks and also help plant indigenous trees as well as conduct a water test on the day,” explained one of the founders, Alex Frost.

The event is being put together by the Green Beings team in partnership with RSS Security which will be sponsoring food and drinks, a jumping castle, as well as ensuring safety for all individuals participating and making the event a family friendly day.

According to Frost, Pikitup will assist with refuse bags. “Riverglades will be helping with marketing materials, refuse bags and gloves and Johannesburg City Parks will be assisting with the removal of alien vegetation,” he said. “Greenpeace members will also be there, School of the Golden will be giving a free kundalini yoga class to participants at 7.30am to 8.30am, and eZulweni Landscaping will be sponsoring PVC piping to protect the trees from being ring-barked when weed eaters cut the grass.”

Frost said the event would also be in celebration of World Water Day. “The aim of River Rehab is to get the local community involved and take ownership of our natural areas. To increase the biodiversity by removing alien vegetation and reintroducing indigenous vegetation, remove litter and other waste from the riverbanks which will improve the aesthetics and overall health of the river system.”

Residents are encouraged to arrive at the park between 7.30pm and 12pm. Donations of indigenous trees will be appreciated.
